Panaji: In a major crackdown on illegal sports betting, Goa Police and the Crime Branch have dismantled a large IPL betting syndicate, arresting 44 people and seizing assets worth ₹45 lakh. The suspects, largely non-Goan, were apprehended during six coordinated raids over six days.

Two key operations led by the Crime Branch accounted for 34 arrests and property seizures worth ₹40 lakh. Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Rahul Gupta called it one of the country’s largest betting crackdowns, revealing that the syndicate extended its operations beyond IPL to other cricket formats and football, using advanced digital tools to evade detection.

Police confiscated 101 mobile phones, 17 computers, 95 bank passbooks, 145 ATM cards, and other digital evidence. The racket had been operating since late 2024 from rented premises, conducting all transactions digitally.

To prevent immediate bail under the Goa Gambling Act, police have pressed additional charges including impersonation and cheating. Authorities are continuing investigations to trace the syndicate’s interstate connections.
