New Delhi: With the air pollution in Delhi and NCRs making breathing difficult, individuals with other serious health conditions need to be particularly mindful of their diet during this oppressive weather. Dr. Himanshu Verma, Chief of the Nephrology Department at Safdarjung Hospital, stressed that all patients need to be careful about their health during this season. He recommended that kidney patients skip morning walks and concentrate on a well-rounded diet.

Dr. Verma noted that patients with kidney issues frequently encounter dietary difficulties during this time of year. It is crucial for them to lower salt consumption and steer clear of salty and spicy items such as pickles, papad, snacks, soft drinks, packaged sauces, jams, and jellies. Packaged juice products ought to be avoided as well. For individuals dealing with swelling, fluid consumption should be restricted. Fruits such as guava (seedless), papaya, and apple may be eaten in moderation (100-150 grams). Leafy greens must be cleaned thoroughly, while citrus fruits such as lemons and tomatoes should be excluded. Patients might drink 300-400 ml of skim milk once each day.

All lentils can be eaten in a bowl each day, but refrain from lentils on days when consuming meat. Non-vegetarian patients should refrain from eating red meat such as goat or buffalo; instead, they can have egg whites, chicken, or fish. Dr. Verma mentioned that kidney patients can maintain their health with an appropriate diet.
