Fake Army Officer arrested for duping advocate
Delhi Police have arrested a man posing as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army for allegedly duping a practicing advocate and her family out of several lakhs. The accused, identified as Sumit Singh (28 years), was suspended from the Army in 2023 and later resorted to fraud, promising government jobs and marriage.
Singh allegedly introduced himself to the victim outside Tis Hazari Court in July 2024, claiming to be an officer involved in recruitment. Over time, he convinced her to pay for a job application, a mobile phone, mess fees, and even gold jewelry under numerous pretexts. He also cheated her brother and father with false job promises and policy renewals.
After a complaint was filed, a special team from Gulabi Bagh police station tracked down Singh to Mahipalpur and arrested him. Police recovered a Samsung Galaxy Fold 6, fake Indian Army rubber stamps, military uniforms, fake joining letters, and a Royal Enfield Classic 350 purchased with the scammed money.
"Sumit Singh betrayed people's trust in the armed forces to defraud innocent victims. His arrest has exposed his elaborate scheme, and further investigations are underway," said DCP North, Raja Banthia.
Singh has a history of fraud cases against him in Lucknow and Hardoi. Police urge the public to verify job offers before making payments.
