Sushil Modi was more than a political leader: Dr Birbal Jha
Patna, 5th January 2025
The Sushil Modi Memorial Lecture was held today at British Lingua Patna, celebrating the life and contributions of the former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Sushil Modi. The event was graced by Dr. Birbal Jha, a noted author of self-help books, who spoke extensively about the leadership and legacy of Sushil Modi, shedding light on his journey from a student leader to becoming a key figure in Bihar’s political and economic development.
In his address, Dr. Jha remarked, “Sushil Modi was more than a political leader. He began his social journey with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and went on to serve as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and Chairman of the GST Drafting Council. His journey from a science student to an esteemed economist and politician is a testament to his remarkable leadership and foresight."
Dr. Jha placed great emphasis on Modi's contribution to the economic growth of Bihar during his tenure as the state’s Finance Minister, highlighting his ability to manage political and economic challenges with great competence. "Despite his background in science, Sushil Modi proved to be a remarkable economist, playing a vital role in shaping Bihar’s financial landscape,” Dr. Jha added.
Describing Modi’s personal and political philosophy, Dr. Jha said, “Sushil Modi hailed from a humble background, where his family ran a small business. His rise to become a central lawmaker and legislator was a testament to his extraordinary political acumen and dedication to public service. His leadership sent a strong message to those who propagated misrule, notably his political contemporary, Lalu Yadav.”
Dr. Birbal Jha, who had a close association with Sushil Modi, fondly recalled their shared history. He recollected the days when they met in Musallahpur, Patna, where they worked together on social causes by pasting bills and posters.
Dr. Jha also highlighted that it was Sushil Modi who had inaugurated the ambitious "Spoken English Skills Project Training for Mahadalit Youth" in 2012, a programme aimed at uplifting the poorest sections of society.
The lecture was organized by British Lingua, an internationally renowned institution for communication skills, under whose aegis the event was held. British Lingua has long been committed to empowering individuals through skill development, and this memorial lecture stands as a reminder of Sushil Modi's enduring contributions to society.
