In a major breakthrough, the district police have arrested two individuals involved in the theft of ₹25 lakh from the vehicle of an accident victim near Welcome Metro Station. The stolen cash, with the motorcycle used in the crime, has been recovered.
The incident surfaced on January 22, 2025, when a complaint was lodged at PS Welcome by businessman Rakesh Kumar, a wholesale rice trader from Ghaziabad. He informed the police that his employee, Kapil Tyagi, had met with an accident near Welcome Metro Station while returning after collecting cash. When police reached the accident site, they found that the injured had already been taken to JPC Hospital and later transferred to GTB hospital for further treatment. However, at the hospital, the victim was unfit to give a statement.
A case under the relevant section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered and an investigation initiated.
A police team led by Inspector Rupesh Kumar Khatri (SHO, Welcome) was formed under the supervision of ACP subdivision Bhajanpura, Vivek Tyagi. The team, comprising Inspector Gianender Singh, ASI Sanjay Kumar, ASI Rambir, HC Harender, HC Arun, constable Vinod, and W/constable Payal, analyzed CCTV footage and gathered intelligence, eventually identifying the suspects.
The police swung into action and arrested Akash 28 years from Bagpat western UP. A sum of ₹7.5 lakh was recovered from him. During interrogation, Akash confessed to the crime and revealed the name of his accomplice. Acting on this information, the police arrested Chetan 25 years from Loni, Ghaziabad and recovered ₹17.5 lakh along with the motorcycle used in the crime.
The accused revealed that they found the victim’s scooty lying on the road. While attempting to move it to the roadside, they discovered a bag containing cash. Instead of helping, they abandoned the scooty and fled with the money.
The police are continuing their investigation to verify if the accused were involved in similar incidents.
The case has been registered and further probe is on.
